Bus service changes in Milpitas
By Meenu Gupta
Due to the budget shortfall, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has announced reductions in service to bus lines in Milpitas. Effective starting January 11, the changes will be "permanent" as told by VTA spokesperson, Ethan Winston.
Route 33 in Milpitas will be discontinued. "Line 47 is taking over for it, so the service won't be discontinued," clarified Winston. "When we had public meetings earlier in the year about the service changes in the meetings that we had in Milpitas, there was a consistent comment that people wanted more east-west service, as opposed to north-south so this does that," he said. VTA has restructured Route 47 as an east-west route serving with the two end points being Great Mall Transit Center and McCarthy Ranch.
There will also be changes to Milpitas High School service. Route 46 and Route 66 will continue to serve Milpitas High School. Route 47 will however provide service on the old Route 47 routing to the school, one morning and one afternoon. Other than that, it will no longer serve Escuela Parkway or Milpitas High School.
There will be major routing change from the Great Mall to McCarthy Ranch via Park Victoria, Calaveras and downtown Milpitas for Line 47. For Line 46 serving Great Mall/Main Transit Center to Washington and Escuela via Yellowstone, weekday service will operate every 60 minutes during the midday and end at 6:45 p.m. Saturday service will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday service will be discontinued.
On school days an extra bus will start at Park Victoria and Landess at 7:20 a.m. on Line 47 and continue on Park Victoria as Line 46 to Milpitas High School. A reverse 46/47 trip will leave Milpitas High School after school dismissal and continue on Park Victoria to Landess. Weekday service will operate every 30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday service will operate every 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday service will operate every 45 minutes from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
For turn by turn directions and map visit www.vta.org. VTA's trip planner by Google, will also give the updated schedules based on arrival and departure times.
For more information call VTA's customer service at (408) 321-2300. "There is not a lot of change to light rail service in Milpitas, most of the changes are more toward Mountain View," said Winston.
