Hayward City Council meetings to start at 7 p.m.
Submitted By Miriam Lens, City Clerk
Effective January 5, 2010, Hayward City Council is changing the start time of City Council meetings from 8 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will combine work sessions with the regular Council meetings.
Council is taking this action for two reasons; first, to increase the transparency of work sessions; second, to foster greater participation in Council discussion and debate by the community.
Work sessions have been held in Room 2A at City Hall rather than in Council Chambers. While this has provided a more intimate and informal setting, Room 2A is not equipped to televise meetings. Moving the work sessions to Council Chambers will enable broadcast on television and internet streaming in the same way as Council meetings.
This will allow the community to hear and learn from these more detailed discussions of important topics, as Council meetings do. The early start time of work sessions and the late start of Council did not always allow working families to easily participate.
Council unanimously took this action at the Hayward City Council meeting of December 15, 2009.
Hayward residents and businesses have the option of inclusion on an email distribution list to receive agendas on a regularly by sending a request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
