Homes found for the Holidays

By Simon Wong

Hayward Animal Shelter's Christmas adoption event, A Home for the Holidays, held on December 12 and 13, resulted in seven adoptions - four cats (two kittens and two adults) and three dogs (two puppies and an adult).

Not only are the staff and volunteers at the Hayward Animal Shelter at pains to find suitable homes for the animals in their care, potential adopters can also be very particular and sincere.

One family started the adoption process on Sunday and returned on Tuesday to take home a cat called Whisper. A second family started the process on Sunday, too. On their return, the shelter informed them the kitten had already been sent to the Oakland SPCA. This family has said it will go to Oakland to find and adopt the kitten.

It is quite common for visitors to initiate the adoption process and say they will return later to complete it. Their failure to re-appear creates a dilemma for the pet, viz. euthanasia, possible rescue by another agency or possible adoption by someone else.

"We can't hold back a precious life if an outside rescue comes along," explained volunteer Christina Gin.

Pet-adoption events are sponsored by the Hayward Animal Shelter Volunteers.
