By Jeff Weisinger
Chabot College men's basketball team took their 6-2 record into the San Jose City College tournament last Thursday, Dec. 10, through Saturday, Dec. 12, and nearly won it all.
Chabot defeated Contra Costa 72-46 on Thursday and the host SJCC Jaguars 83-77 on Friday, but lost to the San Francisco City College Rams 68-53 in Saturday's championship game.
The Gladiators went into Thursday's game winning two of their past three games, and simply dominated against Contra Costa. Chabot guard Derrick Bruce led the charge for the Gladiators, scoring 13 points, on 8-12 shooting, with two assists and a rebound in the 26-point victory.
On Friday, Bruce's teammate Mark Stevenson led the Gladiators over the host Jaguars in Chabot's 83-77 win. Stevenson scored 21, on 8-12 shooting from the field and 7-8 from the stripe, in addition to his assist and six rebounds.
Despite losing to CCSF on Saturday in the championship game, the Gladiators have won four of their last six games with just a nonconference game and the Chabot Classic coming up before conference play begins on January 6 with the Gladiators at Canada College in Redwood City.
Women's Basketball Chabot College women's basketball team is also off to a solid start with a 6-3 record going into the final stretch of the nonconference schedule. The Lady Gladiators split a win and loss in last weekend's Solano Showdown, storming over Modesto, 89-58, on Friday, Dec. 11, before losing 59-56 to Consumnes River the next day.
Chabot, who has lost three of their last five, will look to go into conference play hot when they travel to Butte College on Wednesday, Dec. 23. |
