Christmas Extravaganza

Community Band/Wind Orchestra/Tuba Ensemble

A new three-movement piece, "Evergreen Christmas: A Symphony of Carols" by composer and arranger George Roumanis will be showcased at "Christmas Extravaganza," a combined orchestra concert at Ohlone College. Roumanis has arranged music for television shows such as Twilight Zone, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Now adding to his repertoire is this special holiday song composed for the Ohlone College Wind Orchestra.

George Roumanis has conducted and arranged music for Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Sammy Davis, Jr. He fell in love with jazz at age 12 and soon became a jazz bassist. At age 18 he began playing with the big bands of Benny Goodman, Charlie Spivak, Les Brown, and Tommy Dorsey. After years on the jazz scene he moved from New York to Hollywood to compose and conduct scores for television and motion pictures. Since then, he has moved to Half Moon Bay, and his focus has expanded to classical music and opera composition.

Along with the debut of Roumanis' piece, Christmas Extravaganza features the Ohlone Community Band, Wind Orchestra, and Tuba Ensemble, directed by Tony Clements, and includes special guest the Silicon Valley Brass Band. Many well-known Christmas anthems will be showcased including "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Up on the Housetop," "Go Tell it on the Mountain," and "Festival of Lights." Zawinul's "Birdland" and selections from "Pirates of the Caribbean" are also featured.
