HAAL basketball recap
By Gary van den Heuvel
Preseason basketball began in earnest in the Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) last week, and unfortunately it wasn't the most auspicious of beginnings for the local squads.
Mount Eden High School was beaten 52-33 at the NCS Foundations Games event on Tuesday, Nov. 24, by Pinole Valley High School. The Monarchs, who are looking to improve from last year's dismal two-win season, are returning 10 seniors to their roster this year. One of those seniors, Antoine Mikinzie, led Mt. Eden with 15 points against Pinole Valley. Sophomore Kevin Clerkley added seven for the Monarchs. Kairon Moore and Markee Rhymes led Pinole with 13 points each.
Tennyson High School participated in the Nor-Cal Tip Off Classic, an event at Newark Memorial High School which showcases some of the top teams from the area. For the Lancers, it provided a barometer with which to measure their room for improvement; they took on Analy High School of Sebastopol, who won 27 games last year and the Sonoma County league title. Analy raced out to a 41-11 lead at the half and coasted to a 64-37 win.
Julian Powers led Tennyson with 13 points, and Marvin Towles popped in 11. For Analy, Kevin Aronis led the way with 35 points.
Hayward High School's girls team opened their season with a tough 56-50 road loss to the defending MVAL champion Newark Memorial High School. Nailah Davis was the Lady Farmers' leading scorer with 14 points, and Briyana Clark had 10. Chaunise Powell scored 17 for Newark.
