Results of the General Municipal Election of November 3, 2009 declared - Mayor David Smith, Council members Alan Nagy and Ana Apodaca re-elected. Measure L failed by a 10-vote margin (2,354 For and 2,364 Against). A total of 4,770 ballots cast in the City of Newark election. Mayor Smith (4,021 votes), Councilwoman Apodaca (3,414 votes), Councilman Nagy (3,363 votes) and Nadja Adolf (1,137 votes).

City Clerk Sheila Harrington presented election certificates and administered the Oath of Office.

Alberto Huezo appointed as Mayor Pro-Tempore (Vice-Mayor) and authorized to sign and endorse checks, warrants, and other instruments, and appointments to agencies, boards, commissions and committees.

Approved the following appointments to various agencies, boards, commissions and committees:

Freitas and Apodaca to the Alameda County Transit Policy Advisory Committee, Alameda County Transportation Improvement Authority (ACTIA), Alameda County Waste Management Authority Board, Second Chance, Inc., and Dumbarton Rail Policy Advisory Committee.

Apodaca and Nagy to Alameda County Library Advisory Commission, Newark City Council-Newark Board of Education Joint Task Force.

Apodaca will be the delegate for Associated Community Action Program (ACAP), CATV-Ad Hoc Committee.

Apodaca and Huezo to be the delegate and alternate for Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG).

Smith and Freitas to the Community Development Advisory Committee.

Freitas and Huezo as representatives to the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency and Sister Cities Advisory Committee

Nagy was elected for Political Action Council/Senior Action Plan, Senior Citizen Standing Advisory Committee and Southern Alameda County Geographic Information System Authority.

Smith and Nagy are delegates for the Tri-City Waste Facility Financing Authority.

Nagy and Huezo will be the liaison and alternate for the Viola Blythe Community Center.
