Newark's Mayor David Smith took the oath of office on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at a Special Council Meeting. Council members Ana Apodaca and Alan Nagy were also sworn in.
The General Municipal Election of November 3, 2009 saw the re-election of David Smith, Alan Nagy and Ana Apodaca to local government. A total of 4,770 ballots were cast. Mayor Smith received 4,021 votes, Council member Apodaca, 3,414 votes and Council member Nagy, 3,363 votes. Nadja Adolf, who made her first bid for an elected position, received 1,137 votes.
Thanking the Newark voters, Apodaca said that the failure of Measure L would mean that in the next few months city council will have many discussions regarding cuts to city services.
"We will need the input and assistance of all residents to survive the challenges ahead," she said. "I'm committed to making sure that Newark remains a family-friendly community, a community that cares about each citizen," said Nagy.
Echoing the sentiment, Mayor Smith said that the council puts the City's interests first. He informed everyone the failure of Measure L by 10 votes means the city faces "unprecedented challenge" and assured them "we all will come out of this difficult period together."
