Gala show and sale is coming
By Shavon Walker
Olive Hyde Art Guild's Holiday for the Arts Show and Sale will be celebrating its 27th year in 2009. This year, the three day event is on Friday, December 4, Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6. This is a wonderful opportunity to start shopping for friends and loved ones early. There is no better place to find a unique piece of artwork that will create memories forever.
The Holiday Show and Sale is held at the City of Fremont's Olive Hyde Art Gallery and Art Center. The three room gallery building and upper Mission Room building will be used for the event. A large tent for food service is set up in the courtyard for gala night.
The Friday Night Gala will kick off the festivities from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 for non members; attendees are not only treated to food and drink, but they also get the first chance to see and buy art. Saturday and Sunday are free and open to the public.
Artwork includes paintings, photography, ceramics, glass, metal, jewelry, fiber, wood and holiday themed pieces. Over 80 artists will have their items on display and for sale. There will be a drawing for the painting "Yosemite Aspens", created by award winning local artist Denise Miller. 70 percent of sales go to the artist, while 30 percent go back to the guild.
Between 350 to 400 people attend the Friday night gala, while Saturday and Sunday can reach 300-400 people each day. Attendees are from all walks of life; elected officials and staff from the city of Fremont, businessmen and women, local neighborhoods, OHAG members, and visitors from around the Bay Area.
Proceeds from the show are used to help fund Fremont's elementary In-School Art History Program, local scholarships and student art awards, purchase of art supplies and payment of fees for low income children, purchase of art books for the public library and juvenile detention center, improvements at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery, special gallery exhibits and promotions.
Major sponsors for this year include Hewlett Packard Company, The Anderson Family Foundation and Fremont Bank Foundation. Tri-City Voice is the print Media Sponsor. OHAG members help with the cost of this event with their donations. The guild has donated more than $166,000 to the city of Fremont and its schools since 1989.
