This weekend, Cub Scouts from Niles Pack 112 will start their annual food drive campaign called 'Scouting for Food.' The scouts will distribute flyers door-to-door in an effort to collect cans on Saturday, November 21 for the Bay Area Food Banks. They join roughly 40,000 volunteers in the Bay Area Boys Scouts, Cub Scouts, Ventures and Explorers who will be doing the same thing in hopes of collecting 1,000,000 cans of food between November 21, 2009 and November 21, 2010.
The scouts of Pack 112 hope to top their record last year and collect 3,000 cans of food. The food helps the needy right here in our own communities and is especially important during the current economic crisis. Bay Area Food Banks is a collaboration of seven local food banks serving the needs of 10 northern California counties. As expected, the food banks are seeing a huge increase in the number of clients at their food pantries. Food banks have come to rely upon the huge influx of food right before the holidays. Thanks to the Scouts and thousands of parents and volunteers, many people who would otherwise go hungry have food for the holidays.
Pack 112 is part of the Mission Peak District of the San Francisco Bay Area Council which encompasses the City of San Francisco and the County of Alameda. They are sponsored by Niles Congregational Church and have been serving the Niles community for over 14 years.
Look for a Scouting for Food flyer on your door beginning November 14.It will have information about the types of food we are collecting. Please place the food in a recycled bag or box and put it outside in view of the street by 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 21.
