Capture the picture perfect moment
By Meenu Gupta
If you have the flair to capture the picture-perfect moments of life with technical quality and clarity through your unique lens, submit your work to the Union City photo contest. The contest has come a long way since it started in 2005. "The response has grown every year, we usually get close to 100 applicants," said Recreation Supervisor, Chris Valuckas. In creating the contest, the city's Leisure Services department has collaborated with Charles Fosterwhite, a photography instructor at Ruggieri Senior Center, Roberto Munoz, the city's staff photographer and Diane LaMontaigne from the Arts Association of the East Bay.
Contestants may choose from the six judging categories namely - People for photos of people of all walks of life; Environment, photos of different places or things in the world around you; Altered Images, photos manipulated for artistic purposes; Animals, photos of different types of animals (land, air, sea); Candid Family, photos of candid family moments and Black & White, photos printed in black & white. Each participant may submit one image per category. In the same household, you may submit separate entries provided each person uses different name and pictures. This contest is open to residents ages 10 and up who live in the Bay Area.
There will be a non-refundable $5 entry fee for each photograph submitted. However, if you submit a photo for all six categories, there will be a discounted rate of $25 total. This discounted rate only applies to those who submit a photo in all five categories. Only cash and checks made payable to the City of Union City will be accepted, credit cards will not be accepted. Photographs will only be accepted from the original photographer. Submitted prints must be 8x10. No framed photos, negatives or slides allowed. If your photo is selected, it must be mounted or framed and ready to be hung for display and the specifications for the mount will follow in the acceptance letter.
The display for the winning photographs is scheduled to be at Paddy's Coffee House in January. All winners will be notified by Friday, January 8, 2010. There will be a special reception for photos that are selected on Friday, January 22, 2010 at Paddy's Coffee in Union City. Photos will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, and how the image expresses the theme of the selected category. Winners will be judged first, second, third and fourth place for each category. Each winner will receive a ribbon, certificate, and a special gift at the night of the reception.
All eligible contestants may participate in this contest by filling out the entry form. Only one photo may be entered in each of the five categories. Please make copies of the entry form if you are submitting a photo for more than one category.
