Letter to the editor: Kids Scoop Veterans Day
Thank you so much for your comments regarding the Kid Scoop Veterans Day page.
While creating the illustrations for this page, I was thinking that the Coast Guard is now part of Homeland Security, and to include all of those agencies we'd be getting into law enforcement and the like (Border Patrol, Secret Service, etc.). It was not my intention to slight the service of the Coast Guard at all - the intent of the entire page is to honor all those who serve - but as always, with limited space, it becomes a difficult choice of what to include and what to leave out. I wrestled with how to include reservists as well - is it enough to show a child saluting the Army without specifically mentioning the National Guard, the Air National Guard?
As with every Kid Scoop page, we can really just scratch the surface of any topic we present. The intention is always to spark children's interest enough to explore more about it with their teachers and family members. And for this page, the intent was truly to honor Veterans, give a little background into why the day is observed. The opening article encourages kids to ask family members about their service, so hopefully this is where more detailed discussion between kids and their family members can occur.
All that said, you make an excellent point, and in hindsight I wish I had included an activity that could have recognized the Coast Guard and other services more clearly and properly. Fortunately, Veterans Day is an annual event and we can strive to do better next year with your comments in mind. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment on the Kid Scoop page - that's what helps us learn and improve.
