Local golfers end season at NCS
By Gary van den Heuvel
Golf season came to an end for two local athletes at the North Coast Section Tournament of Champions event at Baywood Golf and Country Club in Arcata on Monday, Nov. 2.
Mission San Jose High School's Madison Hirsch's round of 84, and Moreau Catholic High School's Jessica Salas's round of 94 prevented them from qualifying for the CIF Northern California Championships.
The TOC event was dominated both individually and as a team by Alameda High School, whose score of 416 was 22 strokes better than Foothill High School. Third-place team Granada High School will join Alameda and Foothill at the CIF Championships.
The top individual score belonged to Alameda's Grace Na. It was Na's first individual NCS title. Last year, the junior finished seventh at the CIF; as a freshman in 2007, she finished third at CIF.
Despite her defeat, Moreau's Salas was satisfied with her season, which she called her "personal high point." Her goal at the end of last season was to make it to the NCS qualifier. "I exceeded my expectations," she said. "Even though I didn't make it, I'm still really appreciative of getting there and having such a great time. It was an honor just being there." |
