Artists Open Studios
By Mona Shah
Going to an open studio event is not like visiting another art gallery. It is an adventure into the creative world of visual arts. The Newark Open Studios promote fine art and artists by opening creative spaces to educate and inspire our community; patrons can support livelihoods of working artists in our midst.
For two days, artists specializing in a wide range of media open their workshops, studios or private homes to acquaint the general public with their personal portfolios. Artists will field guest questions and, at a few locations, demonstrate just how the creative process works for them.
Visitors can stroll through studios of local, professional Newark artists and see an amazing variety of art and unique gift items including decorative ceramic tile bird baths, oil paintings, and tile murals of Tuscany and the Napa wine country by Simone Archer. Oil paintings of New Orleans and San Francisco Street scenes by David Dunlap are an annual favorite. Japanese inspired Geisha prints, whimsical shoes and racing bicyclists are featured by award-winning artist, Adriane Dedic.
This year, guest artist Emelie Rogers will display stunning stained glass art pieces. The mother-daughter design team, Heidi and April Davis, will show their elegant jewelry made from dazzling glass stones. Bobbi Burri is a new guest artist exhibiting her masterful botanical drawings and Catherine Aurit has gorgeous floral photography.
This is a chance to get a head start on unique holiday gifts at reasonable prices.
The 11th Annual Newark Artists Open Studios features three studios and eight artists. Resident and guest artists will be at each site. Studios are all within a few miles of each other so it's easy to visit every site.
