Last week, Santa Clara County District 3 Supervisor Dave Cortese visited Curtner Elementary School and spoke to 1st and 2nd graders about how they can partner with the County to protect the planet's changing climate. 'Cortese Climate Kids Club' is designed to introduce young people (grades 3 - 12) to easy ways in which they can help prevent climate change and raise awareness at an early age about the environment.
"I truly believe our next generation has the will, intelligence and creativity to save the planet from global warming," said Supervisor Dave Cortese. "That's why I've created the Kids Climate Club to give them an outlet for their creative energy and to create an avenue for them to become superheroes to save the planet."
Other students can join the club by sending Cortese an email or calling his office for an appointment to address their class. Club membership entails pledging to abide by a list of environmentally-friendly conservation practices such as re-use of resources and recycling products to eliminate waste in landfills. The most important pledge is to encourage parents, family and peers to be more environmentally friendly.
"In future, we shall have contests for 'best video or photo' detailing environmentally-friendly practices or educating others on the merits of saving the environment. We shall also enlist their help with a service project or other events where they can make a difference" said Policy Aide, Steven Blomquist.
Membership is open to youth who have an interest in environmental stewardship. Members will receive regular updates discussing ways to become more environmentally conscious, tips on how to conserve resources, updates on current environmental news and details about volunteer opportunities to help save Planet Earth.
For more information, to join the Climate Kids Club or to schedule a time for Supervisor Cortese to talk with your class or youth group, please call Steve Blomquist at (408) 299-5030 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
