Chabot sports recap

By David J. Nicolas

The Chabot women's volleyball team (12-5) could not find its usual rhythm, losing to Gavilan College in straight sets 17-25, 18-25 and 15-25. This was the team's first loss since September 11 and first conference loss. They rebounded nicely from the loss by beating Monterey Peninsula in straight sets (25-23, 29-27 and 25-14) on Friday, Oct. 16.

The Lady Gladiators take on West Valley College in Saratoga on Friday, Oct. 23.

Merced College silenced Chabot football's 52-point assault of last week by beating the Gladiators 42-20 on October 17. Merced was sure to take advantage of tough defense when it scored three touchdowns while defending the Blue Devil end zone. Chabot looks to improve its 2-4 record against Modesto College on Saturday, Oct. 24, at home.

It was not a good week for the men's soccer team (0-7-0) as it lost its sixth and seventh match in a row. West Valley College pounded the team 5-0 on October 14. Cabrillo College held the Gladiators to one goal as it secured its second victory 5-1. Chabot hopes to break its losing streak against Las Positas College on Friday, Oct. 23, at Alden E. Oliver Sport Park at 4 p.m.

The women's soccer team was shut out 3-0 by Evergreen Valley College on October 14. The team moves to 2-3-1 in conference play. The women defend home turf against Monterey Peninsula College on October 23 at 1 p.m.

Chabot wrestling earned fourth place in the Northern California Dual Meet Championships at Santa Rosa. The team beat San Joaquin Delta College 52-3 in the first round match-up. After losing 12-40 to Sierra College, Chabot beat Santa Rosa 35-20. The Gladiators later defeated Shasta College 30-25.

Stephan De La Cruz (141 pounds) was selected to participate in the California All-Star Match on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25.
