Huskies water polo downs Cougars

Submitted By Reese Spondon

The Huskies water polo - JV girls, JV boys and varsity boys - routed the Newark Memorial Cougars on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Washington High School; but the real battle came during the varsity girls game.

Newark Memorial was confident after winning two pre-season tournaments; showing up on the Husky pool deck wearing Super Hero capes ready to show the Washington Huskies how super they are. The Huskies took an early 1-0 lead thanks to sophomore Sammy Steadman. However the powerful Cougar leader Alyssa Hess wasted no time finding the back of the goal box with a thundering goal, which was followed by another from goal by Cougar senior Kayla Wood. Hess found herself in trouble with two quick ejections before half.

The Huskies soon found themselves in a 4-1 deficit inside of the first four minutes of the game. Hess committed her third ejection by the third period and would have to sit out the remainder of the game. The Huskies trailed into the final period but goals by Kaley Marden, Jocelyn Yamaguchi and Megan Ottoboni would keep the Huskies close. The Cougars offense was no match for a fast and talented defense lead by Allie Hokanson who led the team in steals.

The Huskies mounted a comeback and tied the score in the fourth period with a couple minutes left in the game thanks to a monster shot by Kaley Marden who had two defenders hanging all over her at the time. The winning goal came by way of Husky senior Becca Belliveau as she beat the Newark goalie and the Huskies went on to win, 9-8.
