The Train of Lights began in 1990 as a thank you excursion for our members. Lights were attached to a railcar and off into the canyon it went. Passer-bys driving the canyon saw this and then contacted us asking what it was and how could they be a part of it. In 1991, a short article appeared in the SF Chronicle and about 2,000 people showed up. Word has it we simply did not expect that kind of response. We stayed late into the night, about 11:30 p.m. to ensure everyone who showed up for a ride got one, and thus began the Train of Lights. Our current General Manager, Dexter Day, also known as Dr. Christmas, is the founder of the Train of Lights. For this annual event nearly three months are spent decorating the trains.
