Lady Pioneers win first conference game

By Jeff Weisinger

The wait for win number one came to an end on Sunday, Sept. 27, as the Cal State East Bay (CSEB) Lady Pioneers soccer team won their first game of the season, defeating Cal Poly Pomona 2-0.

Sophomore forward Zuly Diaz scored in the fifth minute and in the 58th minute and goalkeeper Nina Cefalo recorded her fourth clean sheet of the season, while recording a total of five saves in the win.

Cefalo kept Pomona out of the net, despite Pomona outshooting the Lady Pioneers 17-9 in the match, with the last 10 shots coming in the second half.

The Lady Pioneers (2-6-3, 1-4-2 CCAA) soccer team joins the East Bay volleyball team as the first CSEB teams to record wins in their first season in Division-II.

The Lady Pioneers return home after a four game road trip in which they went 1-2-1, as they'll host Humboldt State on Friday, Oct. 2, and Sonoma State on Sunday, Oct. 4.

Men's Soccer
Unlike the women's team, the men could not pull off the win on Sunday, falling 2-0 to Cal State Pomona.

The Pioneers (1-9-0, 0-6-0 CCAA) have yet to win a conference game since play started on September 11. East Bay has been outscored 5-27 during their current nine-game losing streak.

Pomona outshot East Bay a total of 29-5 on the day, as the East Bay backline was clearly outplayed by Pomona throughout the game, allowing 10 shots in the first half and 19 shots in the second half.

"We just weren't ready to go from the kickoff," said Pioneers Head Coach Andy Cumbo.

East Bay held Pomona out of the net in the first half, however Pomona's Marc Glogowsky broke the scoreless half with a goal in the 46th minute against East Bay keeper Billy Morales. Pomona struck again in the second half of a goal by Dustin Suppe from the left side in the 87th minute.

The Pioneers will look to end their nine-game skid when they return from a four-game road trip, for a three-game home stand starting Friday, Oct. 2, against Humboldt State.

Women's Volleyball
After earning their first CCAA win of the season on Friday, Sept. 25, against CSU- Stanislaus, East Bay came back on Saturday to make it back-to-back wins, defeating Chico State in three sets 29-27, 25-21, and 25-22.

Lady Pioneers sophomore Katie Gellerman recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs on the night. Roxanne Neely led the team with a .417 attacking percentage against Chico State.

After trailing 3-8 in the third match, East Bay took charge, fighting back until they tied the set at 19-19.

East Bay will look to extend their winning streak to three games when they take on S.F. State on Friday night, Oct. 2.
