Improve Literacy in the community
At its September 15, 2009 meeting, City Council recognized participants of the Read to Succeed program.
"One of the things that makes Milpitas a great place is the volunteerism that we have in our community" Mayor Livengood said.
The program has been active for four years. Many high school students tutor young people aged from about six to about 13 at the public library. "All of these youngsters spend their time in our library during the summer, when they could be doing other things" the Mayor said.
City Council handed out proclamations honoring the tutors which read:
"In honor of your time, effort, and dedication in helping tutor children the City of Milpitas, the City Council, recognize and appreciate volunteers that help improve literacy in the community."
