Ohlone College and Fremont Bank tee-off for golf tournament benefit

By Miriam G. Mazliach

Get your golf clubs ready to swing into action, as the picturesque setting of Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton is the venue for Fremont Bank and Ohlone College Golf Tournament. Now in its 25th year, this annual fundraising event, on September 21, benefits the college's Athletic Programs, Student Athletic Scholarship Fund and Athletic Endowment Fund.

The golf tournament was originally begun to assist sports teams with their many uncovered expenses. Money from the state, given to the district, only pays a portion of the year's expenses and fundraising is necessary to meet the Athletic program's needs and goals. Fremont Bank's late founder, Morris Hyman, valued education, athleticism and community support. He started the Golf Tournament with Ohlone Basketball Coach Dick Walsh to support the community college and especially its athletic program and facilities. Fremont Bank has supported the tournament every year since, by providing not only monetary contributions but also manpower as many bank associates volunteer their time the day of the event.

According to Ohlone's Athletic Director, Chris Warden, "The extra funds are extremely beneficial in the post-season. If teams do well during the regular season, they are asked to compete in the championship phase. These series of tournaments usually require added expenses for entry fees, travel, and accommodations, usually not allocated in the regular budget."

Warden adds, "The golf tournament helps to defray many of the costs incurred by the extended season and last year, 6 of our 11 teams made it to post-conference play."

The Athletic Department's 11 sports teams participate at designated seasons. In the fall, the sports available are men's and women's water polo, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. During the winter, men's and women's basketball is offered while in the spring, there is baseball, women's softball and men's and women's swimming. (Due to the current budget crisis, tennis is not offered this year.)

In addition to the funds received from the golf tournament, each sports team tries to contribute to their share of the fundraising throughout the year, some more successfully than others. But this is where the golf tournament steps in and helps those teams that are struggling to raise their own funds.

Integral to the success of the event are the generous major sponsors Fremont Bank, Greenstein, Rogoff, Olsen & Co., Fremont Orthopaedic & Rehabilitative Medicine and Ohlone College Foundation.

"We feel Ohlone College has done such a wonderful job educating our youth in the area, it is an honor to be affiliated with this successful event and we encourage others to join us," says Fremont Bank Vice President Gloria Fuerniss, who this year co-chairs the Golf Tournament Committee with Ohlone Softball Coach Donna Runyon.

Tournament Schedule is as follows:
10:30 a.m. Registration
11:00 a.m. BBQ Lunch and Putting Contest
11:45 a.m. Final Instructions and Review of Tournament Format
12:00 p.m. Tee-off with Shotgun Start
5:30 p.m. No-Host Cocktails and Athletic Basket Raffle
6:30 p.m. "19th Hole" Dinner, Raffle, Live Auction and Awards Presentation

During the Awards Presentation, two - $500 scholarships will be awarded to the male and female "Athlete of the Year," by the Ohlone College Foundation.

"In this fiscal climate, the golf tournament will be more important than ever," says Warden. "The community's involvement is strong. Last year we raised $40,000 and we were able to start an endowment that we hope will increase and enable us to provide for our programs in the future."

It's not too late to come out and support this worthwhile fundraising event for Ohlone College Athletic Programs and enjoy a great round of exercise at the same time!
