Chabot fall sports ready for 2009

By Jeff Weisinger

With the fall semester just a week away, the Chabot Gladiator fall sports teams are getting ready for a strong 2009 season. Here's a recap of what happened in 2008 and a look into the upcoming 2009 seasons.

Girls Volleyball:

After starting 3-0, the Lady Gladiators season slowly fell apart week by week. They would finish the season 8-12, including a six-game losing streak stretching from late September to late October.

Chabot would get back on track in early November, defeating DeAnza 3 sets to 1. However, it would not be enough as the Lady Gladiators lost two of their last three matches.

Christa Hicks led the team in kills with 269 and in blocks with 35 in her freshman year. She was named to the All-Conference team, along with sophomore Irene Takahashi-Coker.

Marcy Maldonado led the team in assists with 81.

They will start their season, looking for more than just a 3-0 start when they travel to San Luis Obispo to play in the Cuesta Tournament Sat., August 29.

Men's Wrestling:

Finishing 16th in the state, the Chabot Wrestling team had a fairly successful year in 2008. Stephen De La Cruz (141 lbs.), Spencer Philips (149 lbs.) and Carlos Martinez (165 lbs.) all qualified for the tournament in Southern California where they each fought for a shot at the State Championship.

De La Cruz finished fourth in the State after defeating Sac State's Blake Nichols in the losers bracket. Philips lost to Adam Obad in the losers' bracket and Martinez would lose to Fresno City's Matt Cox by fall in 2:01 to be eliminated from the tournament.

Head Coach Steve Siroy will look to lead his team to another State Championship when they begin their season on September 4 in the Chabot Alumni meet, and then the Chabot College tournament featuring Santa Rosa, Shasta and Skyline College on September 11.

Men's Soccer:

What started out to be a promising year in 2008 simply collapsed in the end where the Gladiators went 0-5-2 in their last seven matches to end the season 7-9-3.

Chabot started out the season on the right foot, winning their first two matches to go 2-0, however struggled throughout their next four matches before earning their next win on September 27 against Monterey Peninsula.

Despite struggling in October through the end of the season, the Gladiators never went down without a fight, best highlighted by their 3-3 tie against then #2 CCSF. However, Chabot would not win another game, and were ousted from the playoffs from their 2-1 loss against Foothill College in the regular season finale.

The Gladiators will look for redemption in 2009 when they kickoff their season on September 1 at West Hills College in Lemoore.

Women's Soccer:

Despite an 0-3 start to the 2008 season, the Women's Soccer team seemed primed for a run at the playoffs at the end of the year. However, the lack of consistency haunted the Lady Gladiators throughout the year as they were never able to get a long win streak.

Chabot won three straight after starting the season 0-3 to even their record at 3-3 before trading wins and losses for the next five matches before going on another three-game win streak to go 8-6 by October 24, heading into the home stretch of the season. The Lady Gladiators won two of their last three games, including a decisive 2-0 win over playoff-bound Ohlone , however were knocked out of playoff contention in the regular season finale loss to West Valley.

The Lady Gladiators kickoff their season Friday, August 28, at Modesto.

Although they named eight players to First Team All-Conference, the Chabot Gladiators failed to find any consistency on the offensive side of the ball, leading them to an even 5-5 record with a 3-2 conference record.

The Gladiators started the season hot, winning 60-26 against West Valley in the season opener, however lost a defensive battle against San Mateo the week after 14-9. Chabot would lose two of the next three games before defeating Merced 28-18 in the conference opener.

After defeating Cabrillo 49-10 on November 8 in search of a playoff birth, the Gladiators fell to the Laney Eagles in the season finale in Oakland, 32-0, to end a shot at the playoffs.

For Chabot to come back form a .500 season, the Gladiators need to improve a passing game that began the season averaging just over 100 yards a game, until Thomas Lanto took over at quarterback, throwing for 152 against the College of the Redwoods; 295 yards against Merced; and 188 yards against Modesto.

Defensively, Chabot needs to become more solid. Despite four of the eight All-Conference players being from the defensive side of the ball, the Gladiators allowed nearly 200 yards a game in the first three games, but allowed 372 yards to Foothill College.

Chabot kicks off the 2009 campaign on September 5 at West Valley College.
