Bill Mancebo's player spotlight: Brett Bower
This week the player spotlight takes us to Pleasanton where we meet 19-year-old Brett Bower.
Bower has resided in Pleasanton for 10 years and is a graduate of Amador Valley High School. While at AVHS, he contributed his sporting talents to track and field and, of course, baseball. The new school year will be taking him back to San Jose State where he plays soccer and football in intramural leagues and is studying for a teaching credential in geology.
What really keeps him busy and in peak condition during summer break is his job as travel team Bat Boy for the Oakland Athletics. Bower's function to support the opposing team is quite a duty, and it's much more than just picking up bats. Brett is responsible for receiving and laundering the travel team's uniforms, managing their bats, helmets, spiking cleats and providing personal items that they will need during their performance. All of this experience is helping him to attain another goal of becoming the travel secretary for his beloved Athletics.
Bower is a busy guy, but he does find time to relax. Believe it or not, Brett likes to watch the Athletics play on TV when he can. He says when he's working, his focus is on the job and he really doesn't get to enjoy the game. Bower also likes to play wiffleball, basketball and simply hang out with his pals. As for snacks; Bower has been known to grab his favorite buffalo wings at Wingstop or a burger at In-N-Out on his way to work a time or two.
