MVAL fall tennis preview
By Biff Jones and Jeff Weisinger
Irvington High School has a new head coach, Dan Leon, and they lost six seniors from last year's squad. With no returning United States Tennis Association (USTA) players on the squad, this will be a rebuilding year for the Vikings and the doubles teams will have to build up from the ground.
Assistant Coach West Kurihara returns as do senior Co-Captains Neetu Puranikmath, Lucia Wang and Annie Lou. Also returning are junior Shilpa Sharma and sophomore Sarena Bui, the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) junior varsity player of the year in 2008. Bui was undefeated at number one singles. Sixteen other girls will be competing for the 12 varsity team roster spots.
Mission San Jose and American High School have been Irvington's closet rivals over the past five years.
MSJHS Warriors also have a new head coach, Bill Nandor. He has been coaching Amador Valley High School of Pleasanton boys and will continue to do so as the boys tennis season is during the spring. Coach Nandor will have to wear hats of a different color during the 2009-2010 school year.
Returning varsity players for Mission are: Yanni Dzoan, Leslie Chan, Alison Tong, Tiffany Yen, Stephanie Quan and Tiffany Huang.
The James Logan Colts are looking to rebound for a 2008 season in which they finished 8-4, despite starting the season 3-0 after beating Mission San Jose in September. The Lady Colts would finish third in the MVAL behind Mission San Jose and league champion Irvington, but are looking to make a run at the MVAL title in 2009.
No pre-season information was available for the 2009 Washington, Newark Memorial nor American girls tennis teams.
