NC splits games at Nor Cal D2 tourney
By Biff Jones
Senior All Stars (14-16 year olds) from Niles-Centerville (NC) of Fremont played the first two games of the Division 2 Little League six-team, double-elimination playoffs in Stockton on Saturday and Sunday, July 25-26. Winner of the tournament, scheduled to end Thursday, July 30 (Friday, July 31, if necessary), will advance to the Western Regional in Ontario, Calif., August 4-11.
Game one on Saturday, July 25, saw a pitcher's dual as NC faced Sutter Buttes from Northern California. Billy Nevin took the mound for NC and he would go the distance as did the SB pitcher.
Only scoring of the game came in the fourth inning when SB scored one in the top half only to have NC answer with two of their own for a 2-1 victory. Nevin gave up four hits and one walk while striking out seven, including four in the second inning. First strike out of the second resulted in the batter reaching base safely as the third strike was dropped and the throw to first was high.
Nevin was also the hitting star as he had two singles, one of which was via a bunt in the two-run fourth.
Sunday's game two in winner's bracket action turned out to be a slugfest as Almaden of San Jose pounded out thirteen hits while NC rapped seventeen. As it turned out, NC was playing two players short because two of their starting pitchers, who could have taken the hill with enough rest, were unavailable. That meant NC tried to piece together a staff for game two as their other two starters had only zero or two days rest.
Almaden scored in every inning except the sixth while NC did not push across runs in the second and fourth innings. There were no home runs in the ball game and only one triple by Almaden. NC used four pitchers while Almaden sent three pitchers to the mound.
Leading hitters for NC were: catcher Casey Jennings, a double and three singles; second baseman Justin Dhana, three singles; and Mark Wik, Brice Fryan and Sean O'Hare all had two singles and a walk. Billy Nevin added two singles.
NC's pitching was just not up to stopping a good team at this level and they fell, 13-9, to fall to the loser's bracket where one more loss will end their season.
NC next played Monday, July 27, against Rocklin, with the winner advancing to play on Tuesday, July 28 (results not available for press).
