After winning the District 14 and Section 3 all-star tournaments, the Mission San Jose Little League (MSJLL) Junior all-stars began play in the Division II tournament with two victories.
The Division II tournament includes six teams throughout Northern California. In their first game, MSJLL squeaked by Mill Valley, 6-5, in eight innings. The lead changed five times as the teams battled to a 5-5 tie after the regulation seven innings.
In the top of the eighth, Jeff Chu ripped a double over the centerfielder's head to lead off the inning. Kenny Jacoby followed with a sweet sacrifice bunt to move Chu to third base. With the infield drawn in, Brandon Facha hit a blooper behind first that the second baseman could not handle and Chu raced home with the lead run.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the first two Mill Valley batters reached base on walks. Manager Wayne Chung handed the ball to Kevin Finch to close out the game. Finch struck one out, and tightened up with both runners into scoring position and retired the next two batters. The MSJLL offense collected 11 hits and was led by Jeff Chu, Kenny Jacoby, Brandon Facha, Brandon Fuhs and Kevin Finch, who each collected two hits. Finch drove in four runs with his two hits and a sacrifice fly.
Starting pitcher Brandon Facha pitched another strong game for MSJLL scattering three hits and four walks over five innings, but Mill Valley capitalized on their opportunities. Jeff Chu relieved Facha and pitched two scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Finch in the eighth to shut down the Mill Valley rally.
MSJLL's second opponent was West Shore from the Clear Lake area. Kevin Finch provided the heroics as he pitched a complete game shutout using only 78 pitches as MSJLL prevailed, 6-0, with Finch retiring the last 12 West Shore batters in order. After a couple miscues in the first inning, the MSJLL defense was flawless as only two batters reached second base thereafter.
MSJLL broke a scoreless tie in the second inning as Scott Havard, who had earlier walked, was balked home. MSJLL then broke the game open and provided Finch all the runs he would need in the third frame scoring five runs, with the catalyst being a bunt single early in the inning by Devon Jones. Brandon Facha, Scott Havard and Reid Marion all provided key RBI singles. The rally was plenty for Finch as he kept the West Shore batters off balance with a mixture of his fast ball, curve and change up.
MSJLL next played on Tuesday, July 28, against Woodcreek from the Sacramento/Roseville (results not available for press). The winner of that game moved on to the championship game on Thursday, July 30; loser moved to the losers' bracket final on Wednesday, July 29.
