UC American and NC Seniors continue Sectional play

Union City American opened Section 3 play with a hard fought win over Niles-Centerville of Fremont on Saturday, July 18, at Sequoia High School in Redwood City.

UCA got off to a 4-0 lead with two runs each in the first two innings. Both teams added a single run in the fourth inning, and then NC closed the gap to 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Top of the sixth saw UCA add two more runs only to have NC score two runs in their half of the sixth. NC loaded the bases with one out in the final inning but could not push across any more runs as the game ended, 7-5.

Hitting stars for UCA were shortstop Brandon Yau with a double and two singles; catcher Julian Grona, double, two singles and an error; and third baseman Brandon Orias with two singles. Joe Armstrong pitched the first six innings for UCA, striking out seven while giving up one walk and hitting one batter.

For NC, shortstop Mark Wik singled, walked and hit a two-run homerun; centerfielder Cody Lebon had two singles; and left fielder Matt Knight doubled and walked. Billy Nevin started on the mound for NC and was relieved in the fourth with two outs.

UCA moved on to winners bracket action on Sunday in the double elimination tournament while NC has to go through the loser's bracket and cannot not afford another loss or their season will be over.

Sunday, July 19, Niles-Centerville Little League Seniors (14-16 year olds) from District 14 (Fremont/Newark) played District 57 (San Ramon) in loser's bracket action of the Section 3 Tournament at Sequoia High in Redwood City. Winner moves on while the losers' season is over.

This game turned out to be a slugfest as NC took a 7-5 lead after three innings. In the top of the fourth, NC tacked on 10 more runs for a 17-5 lead, and then added three more in their half of the fifth. SR fought back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth but that would be the end of the game as it was called because of the 10-run mercy rule after the losing team had its at bat in the fifth inning. Final score was 20-9.

For NC, starting pitcher and leadoff hitter Mark Wik had two home runs, a triple and a sacrifice fly; catcher Casey Jennings had a triple and two singles.

Second game of the day saw Union City American from D45 (Union City/Hayward Area) face host D52 (Redwood City Area) representative, Redwood City National, who had a bye in the first round.

RCN jumped out to the early lead as they scored single runs in each of the first three innings while UCA scored a run in the bottom of the first. Then in the bottom of the third, UCA took the lead for good as shortstop Joe Armstrong hit a three-run homerun to put UCA up, 4-3. UCA added single runs in the fourth and fifth while RCN could only plate one in their half of the sixth for a final score of 6-4. UCA improved is record for the year to 30-0.

Play continued on Monday and Tuesday, July 20-21. UCA took on unbeaten in the sectional, Manteca, from D67 (Tracy Area) on Monday while NC played RCN in the loser's bracket game the same day. Championship game will be Wednesday, July 22, 5:30 p.m. at Sequoia High. If the team with one loss beats the undefeated team, then the winner-take-all game will be Thursday, July 23, same time and place.
