The Mission San Jose Junior all-star team got off to a running start in the Section 3 tournament being held in Livermore at Max Baer Park, winning their first two games - 9-2 over Union City National; and 17-2 over tournament host Granada.

Brandon Facha took the hill for MSJLL in the opening game against Union City National. Facha pitched six strong innings, scattering six hits while striking out six batters.

Facha was supported by a flawless defense that featured Kevin Finch throwing to Brandon Fuhs, tagging a would-be run out at the plate in each of the first two innings. A third inning acrobatic catch by Patrick Andresen saved at least two runs.

After being held in check the first two innings, the MSJLL offense came alive scoring three runs in the third inning after having two out and no one on base. James Gaffey provided the big blow as he lined a two-run double to plate the second and third runs of the frame. The scoring continued in the fourth inning as MSJLL put the game away plating six runs on six hits with Gaffey providing the big hit as he rapped out a two-out, two-run base hit.

Kevin Finch came on to pitch the seventh inning and wrap up the game for MSJLL.

Scott Havard handled the starting pitching duties for MSJLL in the second game against Granada, pitching four shutout innings and frustrating the Granada hitters. And for the second game in a row, the MSJLL defense provided errorless support for their pitcher, including a clutch catch by Kenny Jacoby to end an inning.

The MSJLL offense got off to a fast start and never cooled down. Jeff Chu led off the first inning with a booming double to get the offense rolling. Before the first inning was over, Havard, Reid Marion and James Gaffey had all knocked in runs with solid base hits for an early 3-0 lead.

MSJLL never let up as they added two runs in the second inning and four in the third inning to stretch their lead to 9-0. These rallies included run-scoring hits from Chu, Brandon Facha, Kevin Finch and a beautifully-placed bunt single by Devon Jones. MSJLL then broke the game wide open as they scored eight times in the fourth inning. The inning featured a run-scoring line shot hit over the left fielder's head by Adam Curtis.

MSJLL now moves to the semifinals of the winners' bracket as they play Half Moon Bay at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 20 (results not available for press). The winner of that contest moves to the championship game on Wednesday, July 22; and the loser moves to the elimination bracket semifinals game on Tuesday, July 21.
