Circus Vargas all-new show comes to town

By Meenu Gupta

Comic clowns and a fun fiesta of spectacular acts, lighting and music are all coming together in the one-ring circus extravaganza arriving in Newark this month. Tri-Cities' League of Volunteers (LOV) is sponsoring Circus Vargas, bringing back the magic of imagination left by earlier visits of Circus Chimera.

On July 9, Newark City Council unanimously approved (4-0 vote, Mayor David Smith was absent) a permit and waived the fee for non-profit Circus Vargas. The circus will be located south of the former Mervyns building in the New Park Mall parking lot. There will be ten 90-minute shows over five days beginning Thursday, July 30 and ending Monday, August 3.

"The circus will seat up to 1,500," said LOV's Executive Director Shirley Sisk. LOV brought Circus Chimera to the Mall for four years, the last time in 2007.

The fun-filled, family entertainment will star performers from all over the world. Watch the new show of hobo hi-jinks with vagabond Vladimir's vaudevillian cat and dog revue. Laugh under the clowning effects of Marty Esquede and Jon Weiss. Let your jaw drop to see the multi-talented acrobatics of the Marinelli Family or let the awe take you over in the split-second transformations, "quick change" illusion routine. There will also be a performing horse and pony along with canine and feline performers.

The show is sure to transport you to a land of fantasy with "A Thousand and One Laughs" - a side-splitting spoof of Arabian Nights. Get the heebie-jeebies again as you watch motorcycles race around the "globe of death." Come 30 minutes before the show for an interactive experience in the center ring, especially designed for the children. Jon Weiss, a former contestant of CBS's Amazing Race, will teach youngsters circus techniques and give them the feeling of being a performer as they learn in the same ring in which the circus takes place.

Proceeds from the circus will benefit LOV's holiday programs: Thanksgiving Day Meal, Toys for Tots, Kids Holiday Party and Adopt-a-Family. Tickets are good for any performance. Get set to watch the tumbling, twirling acrobatics under the Big Top. For more information call LOV at 510-793-5683.
