Mission San Jose Little League's determined 10-11 team fended off Newark National, 9-5, on Thursday, July 9, to reach the District 14 title game.
Playing at Patterson School, the 10-11s relied on defense to keep the Newark team at bay. In the first inning, Newark National's first three batters reached base but failed to score as Mission's defense erased two base runners trying to advance to third base. One runner was stopped when advancing on an infield chopper to shortstop. Then, Newark's Ryan Callahan smacked a nice hit to center, but Andrew Chang cleanly fielded it and fired it to his cutoff, Aaron Havard, who nailed the runner at third base. Chris Desiniotis applied the tag.
In the bottom of the first, Mission's first three batters reached base and scored on a two-RBI double by Chang and Sam Lowrey's sacrifice grounder. In the second, Newark's first three batters reached and scored to tie the game at 3-3, and Pakela Nhipali shut down Mission in their half of the second. On the mound for Mission, Lowrey settled down in the third inning and ended up finishing five innings while giving up just those three runs on four hits.
Mission struck for four runs on five hits in the third, and two more runs in the fourth, to lead 9-3. Chang, Lowrey and Desiniotis each collected two hits and drove in two. NNLL threatened in the top of the sixth, scoring on a pair of walks, and a pair of singles before relievers Stanley Chiang and Desiniotis snuffed out the threat.
Mission was set to play Newark American for the title Monday, July 13, at Mattos School. Results weren't available at press time.
