The Newark Bluefins swim team clinched the East Bay Swim League (EBSL) Southern Division Championship with a 640-405 victory over Mission Highlands Saturday.
With Saturday's victory, the Bluefins have claimed their first title in the team's 13-year history raising their undefeated dual meet record to 6-0.
"I am so proud of our swimmers," said Coach Gordon Crosby after singing a rousing rendition of Seal's "I believe I can fly".
The Bluefins dominated with 22 swimmers scoring 10 points or more. Kenny Alcosiba, Heather Blakley, Emily Loaisiga, Jonathan Mui, Emily Aquino-Gonzales and Alexandria Cordova led all swimmers with 20 points, while Allison Garrett and Torrie Gerome added 16 points each.
On what would be the team's finest day, four team records were broken. Emily Aquino-Gonzales broke her own team record in the 50-yard Backstroke at 34 seconds and anchored the record-breaking 11-12 girls 200 Medley Relay along with Lucy Huang, Vincy Chow and Allison Garrett. They smashed the record by almost two seconds, finishing in 2:16.95.
Also setting team records were Joanne Tsai, Noelle Ho, Emily Loaisiga and Viana Chow in the 8 and under girls 100 Medley Relay at 1:21.36. Jeff Parsons, Austin Hughes, Adam Garrett and Sam Haber crushed the existing team record by almost three seconds in the 15-18 boys 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:34.85.
"Swimming is so much fun. I love trying to beat my times," said 11-year-old Kayla Strand. "I hope I will have my best times at championships."
The Bluefins complete the dual meet season next Saturday, July 18, at Newark Memorial High School against Northern Division's Treeview Dolphins from Hayward.
