Celebrate music of the world

Submitted By John Wichman

Hayward's artistic community and guests will gather at Westminster Hills Presbyterian Church on July 10, 2009 to celebrate the music and culture of Honduras.

The evening concert will also mark the opening of a new Coffee Shop, an initiative by the South Hayward Parish. The Coffee Shop is the home and regular venue of El Grupo Lempira, a group of Honduran musicians living in Hayward.

Recognizing their rich cultural heritage, the band takes its name from the national currency of Honduras, the lempira. The lempira is named after the Lenca tribe's Chief Lempira, a 16th century national hero, who resisted Spain's conquest of Honduras.

Fans of punta, salsa, meringue, calypso and other Caribbean rhythms will not be disappointed. Latin dancers will be delighted.

The group will play set pieces and further display their dazzling musicianship through vocal and instrumental improvisation.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free event. Donations to promote local talent are appreciated.
