Family Giving Tree
By Meenu Gupta
Enriching the lives it touches by sharing, Family Giving Tree is dedicated to help people through its programs, which include the Back-to-School (BTS) Drive and the Holiday Wish Program.
The nonprofit organization collects backpacks filled with school supplies to distribute to low-income children throughout the Bay Area.
They work with more than 90 social service agencies and schools like Sunday Friends, Crittenden Middle School, and Child Advocates of Silicon Valley to deliver brand new supply-filled backpacks to children.
"This year more than ever we are seeing the effects of poverty in the Bay Area" said Jennifer Cullenbine, FGT executive director. "We are urging people to visit our web site and sponsor a child online."
The Back-to-School Drive collection of supplies and backpacks is currently taking place from now until August at the Family Giving Tree with distribution to the agencies and schools just in time to start the school year.
Besides donations, the drive also needs volunteers to fill the backpacks and help load the agencies trucks. Those interested in helping out at the warehouse should visit the organization's web site to sign up for a two hour or more shift.
"We are also looking for companies to host backpack drives, those who can't participate can donate online" said Marketing and Media Liaison, Alex Ralston. Backpacks collected by the Family Giving Tree are distributed to children from families struggling to meet life's necessities of food and shelter.
In 2008, 15,000 backpacks and school supplies were provided through social service agencies and schools in the greater Bay Area. Just a little help on your part could mean a better future for a child.
