On Sunday, June 21, Mission San Jose Little League Astros defeated Niles-Centerville Little League Cardinals, 3-1, in District 14 (Fremont/Newark area) Big League Shaghnessy Tournament play to force the winner-take-all game on Monday at MSJ.
MSJ opened the top of the first inning with two runs and added one more in their half of the second. That was all MSJ starting pitcher Ryan Mahuron would need, allowing only one base runner in a 3-0 win.
Next up for both teams was the Big League Section 3 Tournament starting last Saturday, June 27, also hosted by MSJLL.
D14 ran into a buzz saw as they were down, 7-0, to D57 (San Ramon area) after three innings and were retired in order each frame they came up to bat. D14 eventually lost, 11-3, and was sent to the losers' bracket of the double elimination tournament.
Meanwhile, D45 (Hayward/Union City area) played D52 (Redwood City area) in game two on Saturday. D52 jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but D45 answered with four in their half of the first. D45 would go on to a 5-1 victory, moving to the winner's bracket.
A.J. Latimer pitched the first four innings for D45 and was relieved by Orlauwn Ellis who went the final three innings. Hitting star for D45 was shortstop, Johnny August, who had a double and a single.
D45 next played D57 on Monday, June 29. Results were unavailable at press time. Check web site tricityvoice.com/sports for the score.
Meanwhile, D14 and D52 hooked up in losers' bracket action last Sunday, June 28, with the winner staying alive and the loser going home.
D52 opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first; D14 came back with two in the first and two in the second. D52 would tack on single runs in the third and fifth to make it 4-3. Bottom of the sixth saw D14 put the game away as they scored three runs to continue on in the losers' bracket with a 7-3 win.
Mahuron of MSJ started for D14 and pitched the first five innings. He was relieved by Alex Celeya of NC who gave up just one hit and struck out four in two innings of relief.
First baseman, Eric Gwynn of MSJ, had two doubles for D14 while NC shortstop Sean Pope walked four times in four trips to the plate. MSJ left fielder Spencer Peterson started all three of D14's rallies with a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
D14 played the loser of the D45-D57 game on Tuesday, June 30. Again, the results of the game not available at press time. Championship game will be played on Thursday, July 2, with a winner-take-all game on Friday, July 3, if necessary. Both game times are slated for 5:30 p.m. at Gomes Elementary School in Fremont.
Winner of this sectional joins five other sectional winners in the Division 2 Tournament at American River Community College in Sacramento. That winner will represent Nor Cal in the Western Regional in Washington State.
