Summer Reading Game at the library

Submitted By Bonnie Janssen

This summer have your kids spend time reading by signing up for "Be Creative @ Your Library" the 2009 Summer Reading Program. The Alameda County Library is a member of the nationwide summer reading cooperative, The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). Through this partnership, the Alameda County Library encourages children to improve their reading skills by reading and using their public library. It's easy to get involved. Beginning June 8, just pick up a game board at any Alameda County Library. Use the game board to keep track of time spent reading and bring it to any Alameda County Library branch. Spin the dial once for every 30 minutes of reading and win some great prizes.

The game this year is a pathway and runs from June 15 through August 15. Prizes are earned halfway through the path and again at the end of the trail.

This program is sponsored by the Alameda County Library, with the generous assistance of the Alameda County Library Foundation, Carl's Jr., Charles M. Schulz Museum, Lawrence Hall of Science, U.S. Bank as well as Oracle and the San Francisco Giants. "In addition to having a rollicking good time, we have found through the years that children who participate in the summer reading game maintain and increase their reading skills," said Children's Services Coordinator Bonnie Janssen.

The game is open to all ages, and children not yet reading on their own may count time listening to others read. Besides the reading game, special events like storytelling, puppet shows, music shows will also be offered at all of the Alameda County Library branches. Most of these exciting programs are funded by local Friends of the Library groups. For more information on the summer reading game, library open hours and special events call the branch directly or visit www.aclibrary.org.
