Auditions for Sullivan and Gilbert
Sullivan and Gilbert features over 15 Gilbert and Sullivan songs, and takes us behind-the-scenes at the Savoy Theatre for an eventful day in the life of Victorian England's most famous composer and librettist. Now at the end of their illustrious careers, William S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan are preparing to put on a command performance for the Queen of England. But all is not well backstage - Sullivan has been ill and has missed most of the rehearsals; and he's in love with a young singer of whom Gilbert disapproves.
Meanwhile, Gilbert is trying to break in a new soprano in time for the show, set to open in about eight hours. To make matters worse, Sullivan has invited Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh to join the cast. The bumbling duke can't wait to get onstage even though he can't sing, dance or remember his cues. When Gilbert finds out, he's furious. With a company of temperamental actors to manage, and their longtime producer, D'Oyly Carte breathing down their necks, there's plenty for the two men to fight about. But despite their feuds, their abiding love for each other as collaborators and friends wins the day.
