As another school year ends and the thermometer rises, all signs point to summer and in Hayward, that means downtown street parties. Now celebrating its 10th year, these events have become a Hayward tradition with fun and free entertainment for the entire family.
Held on the third Thursday, from June through September, these street parties attract 4,000 to 6,000 revelers each summer. This year, as in years past, a variety of merchants, community and civic organizations, restaurants and food vendors will be featured along "B" Street, extending from Foothill to Watkins.
Organized by the Hayward Chamber of Commerce and City of Hayward, entertainment will be available to delight all ages attending the summer street parties. A wonderful "Kid Zone" area will have face painters, a strolling magician, a bounce house and yummy treats including fluffy cotton candy and deliciously cold sno-cones to slurp.
For car enthusiasts, a classic car show featuring antique automobiles and hot rods, will line Main Street from "A" Street to "C" Street.
A beer, wine and soda garden area will be featured in the parking lot on "B" Street next to the Bank of the West and Bijou restaurant. New this year is the addition of a second beer garden located at Newman Park at the corner of "B" Street and Mission Boulevard. Cool off and enjoy a refreshing beverage while listening to bands playing great music at three locations, in both beer gardens and City Hall Plaza. Bands scheduled to appear are: the DieHards, Maxed Out, Ten Pound Handle, Bay Area Blues Society and the Hayward High School Band.
"We're very excited about this year's street parties," says Jim Wieder, Chief Executive Officer of Hayward Chamber of Commerce. "We've added more than two dozen vendor booths and extended the event's location. During difficult economic times, it is more important than ever for local merchants to network with the community."
Taking BART to Hayward makes the whole event experience a breeze, as the station stop is only a few steps away from downtown. If you drive, there is plenty of free parking at the event. Parking lot options include the parking structure at Foothill Boulevard, between "B" and "C" streets, the lot on Mission Boulevard between "B" and "C" streets as well as municipal parking on "A" Street between Foothill and Main.
Sponsors of Hayward's Street Parties include Hayward Chamber of Commerce, DualStar Digital, Vic Hubbard Auto Supply, City of Hayward, Buffalo Bill's Brewery and The Funky Monkey. Vendor booth space and sponsorships are still available.
Don't miss this free and fun-filled way to enjoy summertime!
