Summer history fun

Submitted By Heather Mellon

Sack races, ice cream, and strolling through downtown Hayward's past are just a few of the fun history activities sponsored this summer by the Hayward Area Historical Society.

Summer History Fun kicks off at the historic McConaghy house on Hesperian Boulevard next to Kennedy Park with an ice cream social on Saturday, June 13 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can enjoy ice cream, listen to music, tour the McConaghy Victorian farmhouse, and kids and families can play old-fashioned games and make colorful prints and fans. Then, a new History Walk led by local historian Frank Goulart will be held Saturday, June 27 at 10 a.m. starting at the Historical Society's Downtown Museum at 22701 Main St. in Hayward. Mr. Goulart will guide visitors through the "Nob Hill of Hayward", a downtown district that is actually one of the area's earliest subdivisions and was home to many fascinating and prominent Hayward citizens.

Saturday Downtown History Walks will also be held August 1, "The History of Theater and Entertainment;" August 22nd, "The History of One Corner" and September 26, "The Leander Linekin Building." Tickets for the McConaghy Ice Cream Social and the History Walks are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and free for children under 10 and for Historical Society members.

And celebrate this 4th of July in 1880's style. Hayward Area Historical Society and Cherryland Community Association are teaming up to sponsor a good 'ol fashioned 4th at the Meek Mansion. Old fashioned races and games, patriotic art activities, music, hot dogs, and much more will be happening from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The activities are free and geared to all ages.
