Near and Far

By Mona Shah

Award-winning artist and teacher, Grace Rankin and her students will be displaying their artwork at Mission Coffee shop this month. Rankin began painting as a hobby in 1980 which quickly became a full-time career. Her commitment to art is evident in her compelling watercolors, oils, pastels and mixed media.

Born in Canada to somewhat nomadic parents, a tendency to travel has continued throughout her life. During her early years, most women where she lived did not have careers and the ones that did were encouraged to follow careers that one could "fall back on." So, she became a registered nurse and raised a family. As a resident of Fremont for 35 years, Rankin gradually discovered her creative self. She pursued several things, when finally her husband said, "Why don't you study painting?" He signed her up for a class and there was no looking back.

Rankin now teaches classes and an occasional workshop. On her travels with her husband, she absorbs the sights and cultures of places she visits. Her paintings possess a vital energy and presence that reflect the sensitivity and color sense of this natural artist. There is nothing contrived or superfluous in her work. When asked how she expresses herself in her paintings, Rankin says that she thinks of her paintings as vehicles for feelings and moods as well as ideas. "I want my paintings to reach out to the viewer so that he or she will relate to how I feel about the subject."

Rankin's paintings have been hung in the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, the Triton Museum in Santa Clara and in the Fresno Metropolitan Art Museum. Her paintings are also in the collections of many public and private collectors worldwide including Mr. and Mrs. Clint Eastwood.
