Surprise! World class martial arts in Fremont
By Marty Friedman
Attention thieves, muggers and all-around bad guys: Fremont is not a healthy place for you, thanks to the USA Wu Chi Kung Fu Academy on Fremont Boulevard.
Conducted by Master Tao He, it is the perfect place for men, women, kids and seniors to develop, as the Master put it, "absolute control over body and mind."
The students at the Kung Fu Academy achieve a level of physical power, concentration, endurance, flexibility, speed and defensive skills that they - and you - simply cannot believe. (Not to mention a big boost to their self-esteem.)
Arguably, there is no one in the USA, let alone California, who is more qualified to train students in the martial arts than Master Tao He.
Born in China in 1964, he began studying Kung Fu at the tender age of 7. In his late teens he was accepted to a sport university. A concept unique to China, students major in a particular sport along with a full academic program.
Backed by five full-time masters including Jacob Tomson, He's personal assistant with a black belt in his own right, the Kung Fu Academy boasts over 400 students in its Fremont and Pleasanton locations.
With a 1,000-year heritage behind it, mastering martial arts in China can be a matter of personal survival.
"In the USA, you may very well be allowed to own a gun. If you call 911, the police usually show up in minutes," said Master Tao. "In China, gun ownership is not allowed by law. What's more, if you call the police, they may show up in 30 minutes, if you are lucky.
"Hence martial arts training can turn the human body itself into a defensive weapon," Master Tao continued. "In China, I had to defend myself against personal attack almost every year".
No wonder that so many Japanese and Koreans have mastered their martial arts skills in China.
Drawing on his very high black belt skills, Master Tao's many awards include the China National Wushu Championship and Grand Champion World Cup International, but he feels that his greatest triumph has been the 200 medals that his students won in this country, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
In 2007, the USA Wu Chi Kung Fu Academy was chosen to host the world wide competition to select Jackie Chan's personal disciple. The beneficiary of Master Tao's very rigorous training, Jack Tu was the clear winner. As Jackie Chan's disciple, Jack Tu is learning more than martial arts at the highest level: He is learning the art of film making, as well.
Why are so many kids flocking to the academy? Simple. Nothing is more satisfying than learning to perform the animal routines that are an integral part of martial arts. In fact, the discipline, patience and respect for each other that kids learn will be with them for life.
Saturday, June 6: the 25th Award TCAAT Martial Arts Championship in Fremont High School; Saturday and Sunday, June 20-21: National Wushu Team Trials in Cupertino; Monday, June 22: Strike Force at HP Pavilion in San Jose; and Saturday, June 27: Kung Fu Magazine Championship at the San Jose Convention Center.
Whatever martial arts belt you reach for, the next time one of those bad guys look cross eyed at you, you'll be ready. Just the way you'll be ready for whatever life throws at you, too.
