Building safety awareness

To help raise public awareness of building safety, Milpitas Building & Safety Department participated in the Building Safety Week from May 3 - 9. At the City Council meeting on May 5, Building & Safety Department staff received a Building Safety Week proclamation from Mayor Robert Livengood.
During this national event, the Building & Safety Department was promoting the use, enforcement, and understanding of building safety codes designed to protect lives and property.
The program this year included the poster contest involving elementary schools in Milpitas. The Building Department sent 1,600 coloring books and blank posters to three schools - Weller, Pomeroy and Zanker.
Each coloring book had a quiz related to building safety. Each child answered a quiz and drew a poster showing what he or she learned from the book.
One winner from each K-6 grade, for a total of seven winners, were chosen. The week following Building and Safety Week, Department staff visited each classroom and awarded the winning students a certificate signed by the Mayor and Chief Building Official along with various gifts from the City.
The program was well received by the schools and they plan to participate in it again next year. The program is also a great tool allowing us to reach Milpitas citizens by opening discussions with the children who in turn would share the information with their families and neighbors.
