Newark falls in NCS baseball tournament
By Gary van den Heuvel
Baseball season came to a disappointing end for the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) champion in the North Coast Section (NCS) Division I playoffs.
Sixth seed Newark Memorial, coming off a win over James Logan in the MVAL tournament final, ran out of luck in their second-round loss to Freedom (Oakland) High School after a first-round victory at home over San Ramon Valley.
Newark Memorial ace Ryan Deeter pitched a gem in the Cougars' 3-0 shutout home win over San Ramon Valley in the first round. Deeter struck out 11 batters in his two-hitter, and scored Newark's first run thanks to a two-run homer by Anthony Sao in the bottom of the first inning.
The Cougars traveled to Freedom High School in Oakland for a quarterfinal battle with the No. 3-seeded Falcons, but ran into a buzz-saw in Freedom's lefty pitcher Billy Wardell, who struck out six Cougars and allowed only one unearned run as Freedom prevailed 4-1 to end Newark's season.
Perennial MVAL power Newark Memorial will be saying farewell to eight seniors: Grayson and Ryan Hudgens, Robert Drumm, Bobby Neves, Daniel Nillo, Ryan Deeter, Keith Dore and Anthony Sao. |
