Leadership Fremont raises scholarship funds
Submitted By Asha Chandra
This year's Leadership Fremont Class of 2009 is proud to have raised $8,589 for Dollars for Scholars, exceeding its target by 72 percent. A check was presented to the Fremont Chamber of Commerce at the class's May 13 graduation ceremony at Washington Hospital.
The class partnered with the Fremont Chamber of Commerce Chapter of Dollars for Scholars to support higher education for high school seniors in the Tri-Cities, Sunol and Milpitas. Through its fundraising campaign, the class raised awareness of the program among both contributors and beneficiaries, including informational materials and participation in community events.
This year, there were a record number of 39 applicants. The process was highly competitive and, based on need and merit, eight students were awarded $1,000- $2,000 each. Since 2005, over 38 students have received scholarship assistance from the program.
Leadership Fremont, a program of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, offers leadership development to local individuals and organizations. Each year, the class completes a community service project, which gives participants an opportunity to plan, organize, and execute an activity that benefits our community.
This year's class included: Geneva Bosques, Fremont Police Department; Desrie Campbell, Fremont Education Foundation; Asha Chandra, City of Fremont Human Services; Jeffrey Faust, GROCO; Tony Gutierrez, Fremont Marriott Hotel; Regina Hayes, Tri-City Health Center; Bill Jennings, Washington Hospital; Mala Seshagiri, Kaiser Permanente; Debra Varela, NUMMI; and Pam Zagorski, Washington Hospital. Michelle Carroll was the facilitator.
The Leadership Fremont team would like to thank the following organizations and individuals for their support with this successful project. Their contributions are greatly appreciated, and have helped local students, many of whom were in need during these tough economic times:
Tri-City Health Center
Greenstein, Rogoff, Olsen & Co., LLP (GROCO)
