High schools participate in nationally recognized local meet

The last weekend of April is arguably the most exciting weekend for track and field. Penn Relays in Philadelphia and Drake Relays in Iowa draw various professional and college athletes to their respective venues, but the Bay Area got their taste of fast times and quick competitors as Logan High hosted the Bay Area Top 8.
The highly regarded meet had a slew of nationally-ranked local talent. Allita Boyd of Moreau Catholic and Ciarra Brewer of James Logan, two of the best triple jumpers in the nation, battled back and forth in the long and triple jump competitions.
The lanky lady jumpers gave the crowd reasons to cheer as Boyd wound up winning 42' 10 1/2" to 41' 11 1/2". Boyd would come back to win the long jump over Malaina Payton of Fremont (Oakland) and women female field athlete of the meet.
Other top Tri-City Voice area athletes included:
Jonte Grant (Moreau Catholic), second in the high jump; Thandi Stewart (James Logan), first in the 400; Arnaux Brewer (James Logan), first in the long jump; Rachel Borg (Newark Memorial), fourth in the 1600; Josh Akre (Newark Memorial), first in shot put, second in discus; and Greg O'Connor (Newark Memorial), third in shot put. |
