"Each generation takes the earth as trustees," said J. Sterling Morton.

To validate the sheer tenacity of what he said, we have celebrated Arbor day ever since 1872. Arbor Day is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. Continuing the tradition, City of Milpitas volunteers come together to celebrate Arbor Day on April 25.

"We've offered Arbor Day celebration for at least seven years now," said Rosana Cacao, Acting Community Center Supervisor. Sponsored by the City of Milpitas Parks & Recreation Services a tree planting event at Jose Higuera Adobe Park will be held with assistance from "Our City Forest."

The event also commemorates National Volunteer Week to celebrate and honor the service of volunteers.

Volunteers will clean upthe area: raking leaves, sweeping pathways, removing graffiti on signs, restroom walls, picnic tables and benches, pulling weeds and reporting any park concerns. "I actually have a group of volunteers already signed up, however, if more people show up at the event, we won't turn them away" said Cacao.

All ages are welcome, if you are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian's signature is required on the day of event. All necessary supplies and tools will be provided.

The City of Milpitas celebrates Arbor Day with a proclamation from the City Council and a tree-planting event in which volunteers can participate in the planting of trees in city park.

This is one of the four standards established by The National Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters, that qualifies Milpitas as a Tree City. Tree City USA is a program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation to provide national recognition for urban and community forestry programs.
