Theater Preview: Once On This Island
By Mona Shah
American High School (AHS) Performing Arts presents the musical, "Once On This Island." Taking place on a Caribbean island divided by social prejudice, "Once On This Island" is a calypso-flavored re-telling of the traditional "Little Mermaid" tale.
This highly original and theatrical musical sings and dances around Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl, who falls in love with Daniel, an upper class boy whose life she saves after a car crash. When Daniel is returned to his people, various gods control the peasants' lives. The gods who rule the island, including the God of Love, Earth, Water and Death, guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
With music by the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, this upbeat musical captures the imagination with tender ballads and colorful dance numbers as it tells the courageous story of the power of love and the effects social class divisions on it.
Beginning April 20, tickets can be purchased in advance at AHS's Theatre 70 from 3p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, or at the door on show nights (box office opens 45 minutes before show).
