An "Indulgence" in a time of recession
By Vidya Pradhan
Given the seriousness of the economic downturn, indulgence hardly seems to be the order of the day. But this particular "Indulgence" is a special occasion, an event to raise funds for victims of domestic abuse while steeping the senses in the tastes of gourmet chocolates, fine wine and good food.
"Indulgence 2009 - an Evening of Chocolate, Music and Wine" is the 6th year for this event, benefiting SAVE (Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments). A non-profit community-based organization, SAVE founded in 1976, is not just a shelter. It provides prevention, intervention and support services in the form of education in the community and workplace, operating a crisis hotline, medical outreach, counseling, support groups and court services.
The Heritage Bank building in central Fremont is once again the venue for this event. Flowers and chocolate will welcome guests. Whereas art was one of the attractions last year, this year's highlight is beer-tasting with samples from several microbreweries available on tap. The quality of chocolates and wine has also been stepped up.
"About 200 people attended the fundraiser last year," recalls SAVE Development Officer Laura Schulmeister. "The silent auctions garnered higher prices than expected."
A silent auction with gifts and gift baskets from local enterprises is once again featured with premium sports tickets, weekend getaways and many other surprises in store. "In addition we have a 50-50 raffle," adds Ruth Traylor, who volunteers for SAVE. "50% of the proceeds go to the winner and 50% go to SAVE."
In the past year, SAVE has answered 4600 crisis calls to their 24-hour hotline, completed 642 temporary restraining orders, reached almost 1200 teens with teen dating violence prevention presentations , provided shelter to 360 women and children and assisted 1890 domestic violence victims with crisis intervention at local police departments.
Eating a lot of good chocolate has to be one of the most delicious ways of supporting this worthwhile cause. "It's like a cocktail party," says Ms. Traylor. "It is an opportunity to have a nice evening out with friends and family while helping this excellent organization."
