Yennie Shyu, a 12-year old, 7th grade student at Sierramont Middle School, is now an internationally recognized artist who started by winning a local competition sponsored by the Milpitas Executive Lions Club. Shyu's poster was among more than 350,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International sponsors the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. The poster advanced and was selected by Lions District 4-C6 for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the 2008-09 contest theme "Peace Begins With Me."
