Track season has taken off for the Trojans at Miliptas High.
Led by veteran junior sprinter Winton Nguyen and determined senior distance runner Melina Shak, the Trojans look poised to set personal and team goals in 2009.
The boys and girls teams competed against Los Gatos in their first De Anza Division, Santa Clara Valley League dual meet of the year on Thursday, March 19. Both Shak and Nguyen won their respective events at the inaugural meet.
The boys beat Los Gatos, 80-38; the girls narrowly lost, 73-54. Shak won the 800 meters in 2:27; Nguyen won the 200 meters in 23 seconds, and the 400 in 52.3.
Milpitas also had first-place performances: For the boys, Michael Kreps won the mile; Devon Crummie was victorious in the 100 meters; and Viet Duong won the shot-put and discus. For the girls, Jennie Bennet won the 100 and 300 hurdles; Matie Brey won the 100; and Christina Nguyen took home the shot-put and discus competition.
The Trojans lost All-CCS shot and discus throwers Luisa Musika and Kathryn Daniels, and sprinter Carrie Thomas to graduation. Coach Chris Abbott, however, is hopeful about his young team.
"This year's team looks to be more balanced," said Abbot. "We are going to push toward our goals."
Next big invitational meet for the Trojans is the West Valley Relays on Saturday, March 28, at Westmont High.
