The Milpitas Knights of Columbus Council is pleased to announce that they will honor Firefighter Captain Steve Moore as 2009 Milpitas Firefighter of the Year on Saturday, March 21 at St. John the Baptist Parish, Pavalkis Hall 279 S. Main Street in Milpitas.
Steve Moore was hired by the Milpitas Fire Department in May of 1984 as a Firefighter -Mechanic and promoted through the ranks of Engineer and ultimately Fire Captain in January of 2003. Captain Moore has contributed to the fire service in many significant ways. He has been an EMT Proctor, member of the Fire Station #1 Building Committee and the leader of the Milpitas Muscular Dystrophy "Fill the Boot" Program.
Steve is also a member of USAR Task Force #3, an elite group of rescue personnel that are on the ready 24 hours a day to respond to disasters throughout the world. He is specially trained to extricate victims trapped by structural collapse during earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, floods, acts of terrorism and other disasters. Captain Moore is known amongst his peers as a "doer" and is well respected for his tenacious training and down to earth teaching style.
Steve's commitment to the community doesn't stop with the Fire Service. Steve and his wife, Cheri, open up their home to foster children. In four years they have nurtured the lives of eight children. Steve is also the "go to person" for information on anything from automotive repair to home remodeling. When asked, Steve claims his fondest moment as a Firefighter was to be part of the rescue team that assisted in the recovery of a toddler during a house fire where the child was found not breathing and subsequently made a full recovery.
Captain Steve Moore is a consummate professional and his leadership, dedication, and motivation are what make him this year's Firefighter Of The Year.
